Definition:Geek

Sorry I am a little late on this but i had a fun filled weekend of stuffing my face. But today is not going to be real in depth or awe inspiring. I have decided to take today's post to clarify exactly what i mean when i talk about geeks. Dictionary.com has this to say about geeks.
geek
  Slang .
–noun
1.
a computer expert or enthusiast (a term of pride as self-reference, but often considered offensive when used by outsiders.)
2.
a peculiar or otherwise dislikable person, esp. one who is perceived to be overly intellectual.
3.
a carnival performer who performs sensationally morbid or disgusting acts, as biting off the head of a live chicken.

WHAT IN SAMS HILL?!? did not expect to read some of that. I mean my definition matches number 3 perfectly.......

okay in fact my definition matches none of those.

hmmm where to start, would probably be easier to say what a geek is not:

nerds- nerds are people like number 2 in the above definition, they are smart sometimes dealing with technology. i would view some one who loves to program or build computers as a nerd. The main fact that separates them from geeks is THAT THEY CAN ACTUALLY DO SOMETHING WITH THEIR LIVES.

its true things that geeks are interested in they can always make some sort of living off of.

gamer- a gamer is some one who plays video games. for the most part they play main stream games, meaning guitar hero, wii, FPS's and sports games. they also spend most of their gaming time gaming either online or with other people in the room. they also don't join game forums.

Those two types i thought were the most likely to be confused with my definition of a geek. a geek might do these things but they also do a lot of other things as well.

they might play games but they do so a lot more then their gamer friends and often play alone. (not always tho)
Geeks also get into comic books , manga, and anime. they play pen and paper games(Dungeon and dragons) or card games(Magic the Gathering)
a geek takes what they do and lives in it and creates a world for them to live in.

so yep i think that's about it for this post, if you disagree with my definition or would just like to discuss them or add your own feel free to do so in the comments
